Google Selects Pierre A. Capdau Charter School To Participate In Its Expeditions Pioneer Program

NEW ORLEANS – Today, Thursday, December 17, 2015, at 8:30 a.m., students from Pierre A. Capdau Charter School will participate in the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program, a virtual reality platform built for the classroom. Second through eighth grade students will experience the joy of traveling across the globe without packing a suitcase.

“This is such a great opportunity for our students, said Rulonda Green, principal of Capdau. “Many of our students have not traveled outside of New Orleans and to afford them the opportunity to experience the world in a matter of minutes is truly remarkable.” “I would be elated if the students visited my birthplace, Brussels, Belgium."

Google’s Expeditions teams visit selected schools around the world, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, Singapore and Denmark. Each team brings a complete Expeditions kit with everything teachers will need to take their students on engaging journeys anywhere in the world.

Using a tablet, teachers can guide up to 50 students wearing virtual reality viewers, making it easy to immerse students in entirely new experiences. The entire expedition lasts for 20 minutes.

“Exposure to different cultures and communities is something that we want for all of our students,” said Sametta Brown, CEO of New Beginnings Schools Foundation. “I cannot wait to speak with our students about their travels to the African safari or their visit to the Underwater Museum in Mexico.”

Teachers will have the opportunity to guide their class and point out highlights during the virtual trip.
