Floods May Be Ahead Soon On Red, Mississippi Rivers In LA

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — State and local authorities are keeping an eye out for possible flooding in the coming days and weeks along the Mississippi River on the eastern edge of Louisiana and the Red River in the west.

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said officials are monitoring both rivers. The office hosted conference calls with leaders of parishes that border the waterways.

In Caddo and Bossier parishes, emergency officials said the Red at Shreveport was expected to crest Sunday at 31 feet, slightly above flood stage.

Bossier authorities told residents along Lake Bistineau that the lake will rise and people with property in low-lying areas should prepare for minor flooding.

Along the Mississippi, forecasts show the river is likely to crest in mid-January in an unusual winter flood.
