“Change is the only constant in life.” That quote from Greek philosopher Heraclitus seems especially true today — for the shipping industry, for the global political climate and here at the Port of New Orleans. We know that change is inevitable. Our response? To make a change for the better. Port NOLA plans to work closely with our partners to anticipate and respond to evolving market conditions. We will make clear-eyed assessments and take purposeful action.
We certainly face a number of challenges. Our highly competitive industry is in a state of flux with historically low shipping rates and economic pressures that have led some of the world’s largest carriers to form alliances, others to struggle and all to work ever more carefully to manage costs and investments.
Uncertainty in the geopolitical sphere includes concerns that could directly affect global goods movement. A new administration in the United States has indicated there may be changes to the country’s trade policy. On the positive side, there is also indication that a massive investment in our nation’s infrastructure could be in the works. We are connecting with other ports and our American Association of Port Authority partners to educate legislators so they understand the ramifications of decisions they make.
Here at Port NOLA, we are also experiencing change. This is my first letter as President and CEO. I am honored to serve the Port, our shippers and customers. You can read more about our leadership transition on page 8. We are also pleased to announce an exciting change to the Port’s carrier profile with the addition of CMA CGM’s new direct PEX3 service to Asia. Read more on page 6.
As we move forward, I am confident we have the tools we need to handle all of the challenges and opportunities that come our way. We are particularly fortunate that Port NOLA’s Board of Commissioners is strong, unified and committed to both sustainable growth and bold action. The commissioners’ industry experience and diverse skill sets are true assets.
Although change may be constant, I can tell you that one thing will never change – our commitment to providing top-notch service. The entire Port team is capable of meeting your needs, and we pledge to do that in the coming months and years.
In the meantime I plan to personally visit as many of you as I possibly can. In the event I don’t get the opportunity to see you in person, please feel free to email me.
