BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to extend a temporary housing program that is paying for hundreds of Louisiana families to stay in hotel and motel rooms after this summer's historic flooding.
At the state's request, FEMA agreed Thursday to a 30-day extension in the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program. That will allow an estimated 2,000 families to remain in government-subsidized lodging until Jan. 17. The previous deadline had been Dec. 17.
August's flooding, from a storm that dumped as much as 2 feet of rain on part of the region, damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes in south Louisiana.
FEMA also has paid for hundreds of families to live in government-supplied mobile homes and provided rental assistance to tens of thousands of other households.
