Ex-Rep. Jefferson Permanently Loses Louisiana Law License

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana's Supreme Court has formally revoked the law license of a disgraced former congressman.

Friday's ruling revokes former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson's license to practice law in Louisiana, and permanently prohibits him from being readmitted to the practice of law in the state.

Jefferson, a Democrat who represented the New Orleans area for nine terms in Congress, was convicted in 2009 of conspiracy, wire fraud, bribery, money laundering and racketeering. He is serving a 13-year-sentence.

A Virginia jury convicted Jefferson of soliciting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals with government leaders in Africa.

Friday's state Supreme Court action followed a filing of formal charges in 2011 by the state Office of Disciplinary Counsel.
