BATON ROUGE (AP) — The state Board of Ethics has fined Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts for filing overdue campaign finance reports just hours after he qualified to run for re-election in the Oct. 24 primary.
The board said in a letter Friday that the $6,000 fine stems from Roberts' filing reports that were due in February, April and July on Sept. 9, shortly after he qualified with the parish clerk.
The New Orleans Advocate’s Ramon Antonio Vargas reports Roberts said Monday he will seek a waiver of the fines because software meant to facilitate the filing crashed when his staff tried to use it.
The late filings were at the center of a lawsuit that unsuccessfully sought to disqualify Roberts' re-election bid.
Kenner Mayor Louis Congemi and Jimmy Lawson also are in the race.
