HOUMA, LA (AP) — The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program and its partners will spend the next year updating the document that outlines how the program promotes and preserves local estuaries.
The Courier’s Meredith Burns reports there was a consensus among management conference members at Thursday's meeting to move forward with a 20-month plan to revise the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.
Director Susan Testroet-Bergeron said the plan has not been modified since it was created 25 years ago.
Testroet-Bergeron says the plan incorporates the interests of about 4.2 million acres of land and people who live in the area.
The plan includes seven priority problems identified for the estuary: hydrological modification, sediment deduction, habitat loss, eutrophication, pathogens, toxic substances, and changes in living resources.
A revised plan is expected by next fall.
