Eric And Maleka Beal, Fit NOLA’s Healthy Hero July Winners

NEW ORLEANS – Fit NOLA, Whole Foods Market New Orleans and Rock and Roll NOLA announced Eric and Maleka Beal as the July 2015 Healthy Hero awardees. A “Healthy Hero” is a New Orleanian dedicated to improving the physical and nutritional wellness of their community.

         "The Health Department’s Fit NOLA initiative is creating cross-sector partnerships that identify and assist residents with connections to healthy options," said Charlotte Parent, director of the New Orleans Health Department. “Congratulations to our July winners who join us in taking action to reach our goal of becoming one of the top ten fittest cities in the United States."

         Eric and Maleka Beal were selected out of 16 applicants for their influential work serving multiple areas in New Orleans. Since 2006, they have shed a combined 300 pounds. As they continue their quest to maintain healthier habits, they continue to extend healthy lifestyle services to their peers and community members. Through the creation of Better Choices Co., Eric and Maleka have made the commitment to promote healthy living. Through their organization’s work, Eric and Maleka bridge the gap on nutrition and physical activity at Anytime Fitness (Gentilly) and with Xavier University’s Healthy Eats Program.

         As the July Healthy Heroes, Eric and Maleka will receive recognition from the Fit NOLA partnership, a Whole Foods Market gift card paired with a healthy eating tour of Whole Foods Market’s Broad Street location and a complimentary entry into the Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans marathon, half marathon or 10k race.

         Healthy Hero applications for August 2015 nominations are now open. All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, August 26, 2015 to be considered for the August Healthy Hero award.
