NEW ORLEANS – More than 5,000 paramedics, firefighters, emergency medical physicians and first responders from more than 40 countries across the globe are attending the EMS World Expo, North America’s largest educational conference and trade show for emergency medical services, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center through Friday, October 7, 2016.
Key themes include heroin overdose, mass shootings and EpiPens.
The industry’s largest exhibit hall will feature simulation labs with manikins in which attendees can test their clinical skills, 400 exhibitors and a helicopter landing, Wednesday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m.
In addition to the industry’s largest exhibit hall and more than 140 educational sessions, EMS World Expo features: state-of-the-art lifesaving technology, products and services from 350+ exhibitors; world-renowned faculty with expertise in all aspects of medicine, operations and emergency/ disaster response; the World Trauma Symposium, the World Trauma Symposium where top experts present and debate the latest trends and best practices in pre-hospital trauma care; exhibit hall demos in critical areas such as tactical response, ambulance safety, ultrasound use and more, plus a simulation lab where attendees can try out the market’s latest and most advanced products and simulators; and an appearance by the cast of the popular A&E show Nightwatch.
Speaker Ken Bouvier, a veteran of New Orleans EMS and past president of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), will explain the heroin epidemic, how it enters the brain and affects body functions, including breathing and heart rate, as well as use of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone and other ways to care for victims. Victims of allergic reactions will also take the spotlight as the high price of EpiPens makes headline. New tactics will allow EMTs to safely administer epinephrine and save-lives using a more cost-effective approach.
Numerous classes, simulations and workshops will help prepare paramedics, firefighters and first responders to safely respond to active shooter scenes and care for their victims. The event’s mass-shooting/ active-shooter/ tactical EMS content includes an active-shooter simulation lab, where New Orleans tactical medics will share best practices and components of the New Orleans EMS all-hazards plan and attendees can practice essential skills.
The event is conducted by EMS World, the field’s first and foremost educational journal and hosted in partnership with the NAEMT, the national advocacy group for EMS and its providers.
This year’s exposition is expected to bring more than 5,000 attendees with an economic impact of more than $5.8 million.
