Edwards Asks Court To Drop Jindal Lawsuit, Reject Landry

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Gov. John Bel Edwards has formally asked an appeals court to drop the lawsuit former Gov. Bobby Jindal filed against federal officials over the Common Core education standards.

Edwards also asked the court to reject Attorney General Jeff Landry's move to keep the suit alive. His lawyers told the 5th U.S. Circuit court of Appeals in a Thursday filing that Landry has no constitutional authority to override the governor's decision to kill the suit.

Jindal's suit alleged that the Obama administration illegally used federal money and policy to coerce Louisiana into adopting Common Core standards.

A federal judge rejected the allegation last year. Jindal appealed before leaving office. Edwards says the suit is expensive and unnecessary because of new federal law and the state's work to revise the education standards.
