NEW ORLEANS – Announced today, popular food and dining online network Eater.com released their 2018 Best New Restaurant list. The list included restaurants from across the country, and named Bywater American Bistro – Chef Nina Compton's new venture – as one of the year's 18 top new restaurants.
"As Eater’s national critic, I spend most of my life on the road; I seek out meaning in restaurants," said Eater.com writer Bill Addison (who created the list). "I’m not just talking about why comfort food remains in fashion or how alligator pepper may be the next turmeric. I’m thinking about how restaurants reflect shifting cultural values — and about how their own creative achievements stoke diners’ imaginations and ambitions.
The list includes restaurants opened between May 2017 and May 2018.
This past March, Compton, her husband Larry Miller and Compere Lapin sous chef Levi Raines teamed up to bring local flavor to the Bywater, opening Bywater American Bistro in the Rice Mill Lofts.
"Several dishes still exalt in Caribbean flavors — a lush distillation of tomato, coconut milk, and spices ignites her rabbit curry," said Addison. "But the kitchen also embarks on a survey of the cultures that comprise this singular city."
Bavel restaurant in Los Angeles, Suerte in Austin and Maydan in Washington D.C.(to name a few) also made the list.
