Different Views On An Immigration Meeting

Mayor Mitch Landrieu and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions met about policies regarding immigrants.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has met with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions about the city's law enforcement policies regarding immigrants.

The Justice Department earlier this year said New Orleans could lose grant money for failing to comply with federal law. After Thursday's meeting the department issued a statement saying the city has committed to sharing information with federal law enforcement authorities.

Landrieu, a Democrat, issued a statement saying Sessions and Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, both Republicans, have "come around to agreeing" that the city is in compliance.

Kennedy, who called for the meeting, issued a statement saying the issue is "closer to a resolution."

The issue is playing out nationwide in federal courts, where judges have blocked the department from withholding law enforcement grant money over immigration policy.
