NEW ORLEANS – It’s a trendy neighborhood with few housing options. Resident developer Sean Cummings wants to change all that in the Bywater. His new apartment complex project is being considered by the City Planning Commission at 1:30 p.m. today.
Under Agenda Item A – Old Business To Be Considered Under The Former Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance, Zoning Docket 087/15, the proposal comes as a “Request by VIA LATROBE LLC for a Conditional Use to permit a mixed-use development containing multiple-family residential units and commercial units including a brewery in an LI Light Industrial District, on the entireties of Squares 143 and 169, in the Third Municipal District, bounded by Montegut, Chartres, Press and Dauphine Streets. The municipal addresses are 2940 and 2941 Royal Street and 1 Press Street. (PD 7) (AB).”
According to NOLA.com/ The Times-Picayune’s Richard Thompson, Cummings plans to build Via Latrobe, a 260-unit development that would include 6 buildings ranging in height from 25 to 75 feet, on the site of 2 city blocks currently housing abandoned industrial buildings along the Bywater riverfront.
Thompson reports the 4-acre complex near Crescent Park would include mostly 2-bedroom apartments that would average about 1,240 square feet and rent at market rates. There will also be 23,169 square feet of ground-floor retail space, two small corner parks, rooftop terraces and gardens and an urban farm.
According to Thompson, The City Planning Commission has recommended approval of a conditional use permit, and the proposal would then go before the City Council.
