NEW ORLEANS – 103-year-old Marian Mayer Berkett was named the 2016 Alumna of the Year by the Tulane Law Review at an event held on April 14, 2016.
Berkett joined Deutsch Kerrigan in August 1937 as an associate.
She is often credited for being the first woman hired at a Louisiana law firm. She said she appreciates co-founder Eberhard Deutsch as “a man of vision” for giving her the opportunity.
Over the course of many years, she has had phenomenal success as a trial lawyer, bringing to successful conclusion approximately 97% of a multitude of cases in which she has often defended the unfavored client.
She wrote and published many works including "Workmen's Compensation Law in Louisiana" (Louisiana State University Press, 1937). She also is a Tulane Law School 2013 Hall of Fame inductee.
Deutsch Kerrigan was founded in New Orleans in 1926 by Eberhard Deutsch and Emmett Kerrigan.
The Tulane Law Review’s Alumna of the Year century celebration was attended by more than 200 former and current editors from across the country.
