Delgado Community College Announces Second Start Classes

NEW ORLEANS — It’s not too late to get started in college this fall. Delgado Community College is offering a Second Start of the Fall 2015 semester. This unique opportunity allows students who missed the August start date more time to prepare, enroll and register for classes. Students still have time to apply for financial aid, take a placement test if necessary and enroll for classes that begin in October.

“We are enabling those who could not meet our deadlines for regular registration this fall to begin their studies without further delay,” said Delgado Chancellor Joan Davis. “And those who are simply motivated to do a full semester’s coursework in a briefer period of time will also benefit from Second Start.”

Second Start is an opportunity for students to enroll in college this fall instead of waiting until next year. Students who got a late start with the financial aid process, or who missed the deadline at another school in the area, will find Second Start beneficial. Rather than waiting until January to start, they can start in October and earn credits to keep progressing toward their goals.

Second Start courses are full-credit courses taught over eight weeks instead of 16. They are compressed and move at a quicker pace, similar to a summer term. Classes are typically core courses, which appeal to a variety of student majors. Current, former and new Delgado students may all enroll through Second Start.

Many Second Start courses are offered completely online. Accounting, algebra, business, English, history, music, psychology—these and others are among the online course offerings. For some students, taking an eight-week online class may be just the kick-start they need to ease back into college.

Other Second Start courses are offered in a classroom setting, face-to-face with the instructor and other students. Delgado locations offering these classes are: City Park and Sidney Collier (New Orleans east bank), Jefferson (Metairie), Northshore (Slidell) and West Bank (Algiers).
