Delgado Announces Partnership To Serve Disadvantaged Veterans

NEW ORLEANS — Beginning in early November, Delgado Community College will begin providing services to eligible military veterans at its City Park Campus in New Orleans through the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP).

DVOP specialists will be housed on-campus to provide intensive services to veterans and eligible spouses. Maximum emphasis is directed toward serving those who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, including homeless veterans, and veterans with barriers to employment. These barriers include: disabled, homeless, recently discharged and unemployed, criminal record, low-income, age 18-24 and lacking a high school education.

Only 2% of Louisiana’s veterans currently receive services in New Orleans, but an estimated 9.5% of the state’s veterans reside in the city, making the Delgado partnership critical in expanding much-needed services to that entire population.

Veterans may also benefit from other services offered at the college, including Veterans Affairs, Veterans Upward Bound, Single Stop and Scale-up Southeast Louisiana (Scale-Up SELA). The latter program provides accelerated training for eligible students in advanced manufacturing and energy programs. Scale-Up SELA students also receive support services to help ensure successful completion of programs, opportunities to gain national industry-recognized certifications and job readiness/ placement assistance.

“Delgado is excited to partner with the Louisiana Workforce Commission and the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program,” said Dr. Arnel Cosey, Delgado vice chancellor for student affairs. “Having DVOP specialists working at the college provides access to services for veterans already enrolled at Delgado, and offers one-stop shopping for veteran services to those not currently enrolled at the college.”

DVOP specialists develop and provide employment and job-training opportunities for disabled and other qualified veterans. Funding comes through the Veterans’ Employment and Training Service of the U.S. Department of Labor, and is administered by the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
