COVINGTON, LA (AP) — Covington voters will decide on Nov. 21 whether to rededicate a 1-cent sales tax that is now restricted primarily to capital improvements in the city.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune’s Kim Chatelain reports the city council Tuesday night agreed to put on the ballot a proposal that would lift the restrictions on the tax revenue and give the municipality leeway to spend it on general government expenses.
The drive to rededicate the tax money – about $4 million a year – comes at the behest of Mayor Mike Cooper, who said the current spending restrictions on the tax revenue were put in place decades ago when the city's needs were different than they are now. The council voted unanimously on a resolution calling for the Nov. 21 referendum.
