COVINGTON, LA – Rick Smith, 60, who was reelected to a second term as Covington District E Councilman in March 2015, has declared his intent to run for the Mayor of Covington in 2019.
"It may seem like an early launch, but with Mayor Mike Cooper leaving office in three years due to term limits, I anticipate a somewhat crowded field," Smith said. "I want to lock in early support and let the people of Covington know that I'm ready to serve them in a new capacity after the next election."
A financial services professional, Smith and his wife Molly have made Covington their home for 25 years. They have two grown children.
"We've accomplished a lot in my five years on the Council," Smith said. "We've worked well with the administration and with each other. We've put the people first, we've enhanced infrastructure and public safety, we've grown our economy, and we've faced crises together. I'm excited to continue my service to the people of District E and I'm looking forward to preparing for an earnest and aggressive campaign for mayor."
Last week, Smith sent a letter to nearly 300 established supporters of his work on the Council, letting them know of his intentions. A kickoff fundraiser will be held in mid June.
