Council: Mardi Gras Bead Tossing Is Now One-Way

BILOXI, MS (AP) — The Biloxi City Council has made it illegal for spectators to throw anything onto parade floats or at marchers.

The Sun Herald’s Mary Perez reports Councilwoman Dixie Newman said Tuesday it seemed senseless to need to prohibit throwing objects at floats. She suggested the city check the regulations in Mobile and New Orleans, both of which have larger Mardi Gras parades.

Council President Kenny Glavan says the new ordinance actually mimics the New Orleans ordinance.

City Attorney Michael Collins says the penalty will be set by the judge, depending on the severity of the offense.

Collins says people over the years have gotten rowdier, to the point that schools may not be comfortable to have students marching in the Mardi Gras parades.
