NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Nearly 200 workers at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans face layoffs in January after the maintenance contract for the facility changes hands.

Jacobs Technology, the company that currently maintains and operates Michoud, notified state workforce officials Monday that it failed to win renewal of its contract and will be eliminating 195 jobs as a result. The layoffs are effective Jan. 31, 2016, when the company's contract ends.
Syncom Space Services, based in Arlington, Virginia, will take over management of the facility.
The layoffs announced Monday will reduce the number of management staff at the facility. The cuts affect both salaried and hourly positions, ranging from accountants and engineers to maintenance workers and mechanics.
