On July 24 New Orleans Terminal LLC began working the first vessel of Seaboard Marine’s expanded South American service at the Port of New Orleans. The service connects U.S. exporters to Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica in addition to Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.
Seaboard Marine, an ocean transportation company that provides direct, regular service between North America, the Caribbean Basin, Central and South America, is one of many carriers committing larger fleets and offering expanded services at the Port of New Orleans. Seaboard’s service expansion adds Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, providing U.S. importers and exporters with fast, direct transit to and from the U.S. Gulf Coast.
“This is a positive development for our existing customers as well as those currently moving cargo between the Gulf and Central and South America,” said Jose Concepcion, Seaboard Marine Vice President. “We are very excited about this new weekly fixed-day service and the broad possibilities for increased trade that such a fast transit time — both southbound and northbound — offers our clients.”

Seaboard isn’t the only carrier broadening its weekly services at the Port. Marseille, France-based CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company, initiated a new direct service from the Port of New Orleans to the west coast of South America in August.
On Aug. 18 the Pomerenia Sky arrived at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal launching CMA CGM’s Med America service. The new service is wholly operated by CMA CGM vessels and Port stevedore Ports America will handle the cargo for the Med America service.
The weekly service offers direct routes to San Antonio, Chile; Callao, Peru; and Buenaventura, Colombia. The new calls are in addition to the already established CMA CGM weekly South America direct calls to Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Cartagena, Colombia. Primary inbound cargo opportunities for New Orleans include fresh fruits, forest products and containerized copper to be traded on the London Metal Exchange, while export cargo will include fresh poultry and plastic resins for manufacturing.
There are more than 30 carriers (see list on page 12) that call the Port and many of them offer regular weekly services. It’s these consistent services that contributed to recent record-breaking cargo numbers and the Journal of Commerce recognizing the Port of New Orleans as one of the “Fastest Growing Import and Export Ports” in the United States. Seaboard and CMA CGM’s upgraded South and Central American services add to the Port’s regular calls and underscore the carriers’ commitment to growth in New Orleans.
“Our carrier profile is extensive, including container, breakbulk and heavy lift partners, that provide global services to our shippers,” said Robert Landry, Vice President of Commercial and Operations at the Port of New Orleans. “We are seeing an increased interest from many of these carriers to grow their business in New Orleans. The Port and our efficient terminal operators have made the necessary investments to meet their needs.”
