Construction On Bridge Replacement Set To Begin Next Year

HOUMA, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is moving forward with plans to replace a bridge.

Transportation spokeswoman Brandie Richardson tells The Courier of Houma that construction of the Bayou Chevreuil Bridge just north of the Lafourche Parish line is expected to begin in February. Last week, transportation officials held a meeting to solicit comments from the public.

Richardson says a wider concrete bridge will improve safety by increasing the shoulders and reducing the steepness to improve sight lines. A diversion bridge will be built for traffic to continue passing through the area. While traffic passes on the diversion structure, crews will remove the existing bridge and install the new one.

The $8 million project is being funded through the department's Bridge Preservation Program.
