NEW ORLEANS – The Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers (CLAG) is holding its meeting from Jan. 3-5, in New Orleans, once the capital of the Spanish colony of Louisiana.
CLAG is an international scholarly society that has been meeting to discuss social and environmental research on Latin American topics since 1970.
In the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, 717 Orleans St., some 160 people from the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and Europe will come together to present and discuss their latest research on a wide variety of geographical topics related to Latin America and Latinos in the U.S., including New Orleans.
All sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday (Jan. 4-5) at the Bourbon Orleans. Organizers say this conference is large enough to be diverse but small enough for participants to enjoy that diversity. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and over the following two days participants will share and discuss the latest research in Latin Americanist geography. At the closing reception on Thursday evening attendees will celebrate individual awards and the accomplishments of community scholars.
On Friday, Jan. 6, attendees will be able to enjoy field trips in and around New Orleans.
CLAG conference organizers say New Orleans is the “gateway to Latin America,” and since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 its longstanding Hispanic and Latino communities have experienced rapid growth associated with the reconstruction.
Late registration for the conference is available through Jan. 5.
Registration includes hot hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer at opening (welcome) and closing (awards) receptions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
