NEW ORLEANS – The City’s Network for Economic Opportunity and JOB1 will continue its Summer Career Pathways Program orientations this week to provide training and employment opportunities in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors.
In October 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor committed $8.2 million to support workforce development and training in New Orleans. Of that, a $5.8 million competitive grant went to the City of New Orleans Office of Workforce Development and a $2.4 million grant went to Delgado Community College for workforce development.
The City has leveraged the grant to improve the delivery of workforce training services, facilitate cooperation across federal, state and local workforce programs and funding streams and expand partnerships within industry sectors to develop programs that reflect current and future skill needs.
The City’s Office of Workforce Development is working with a variety of training providers and community partners and organizations to customize training programs for local workers interested in obtaining certification in trades in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors. Training is set to begin on June 20. The training program is a lottery and candidates who wish to be eligible for the lottery must attend one of the scheduled orientations. In addition to education and skill training, participants will be provided with the wrap-around supportive services needed to increase completion and experience in real work settings to gain nationally recognized industry certifications.
Career training will be offered in industrial maintenance, electrical and pipefitting.
In September 2014, the Mayor launched the Economic Opportunity Strategy to connect disadvantaged job seekers and businesses to new opportunities.
Both grants, as part of Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation Fund, seek to improve job training programs across the country. Delgado was one of 270 community colleges around the country that received a total of $450 million in federal job-driven training grants. This funding was part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) competitive grant program, which is co-administered by the Department of Labor and Department of Education.
