NEW ORLEANS – Today, the New Orleans Health Department (NOHD) and the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) will hold an exercise to train staff and volunteers to run a medical special needs shelter in the event of a hurricane or another emergency at the Andrew P. Sanchez & Copelin-Byrd Multi-Service Center, 1616 Caffin Ave., at 11:00 a.m.
The medical special needs shelter would open following an emergency event for individuals with medical or mobility needs who may not be able to take care of themselves in a traditional shelter or at home if there is no electricity.
This exercise will take place in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services in an effort to ensure that local and regional officials are coordinated as hurricane season approaches.
Both Charlotte Parent, Director, New Orleans Health Department, and Aaron Miller, Director, Office of Homeland Security and Emergency, are expected to attend.
