City To Hold Abandoned Vehicle Auction Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday, July 12, 2016, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will hold its 4th abandoned vehicle auction of 2016. The auction will take place at the Almonaster Auto Impound lot located at 10200 Almonaster Ave., and begins at 9:00 a.m. The vehicle preview and bidder registration is Monday, July 11, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. All bidders must arrive prior to 3:30 p.m. As in prior auctions, a bidder will be charged a $50 administrative fee at the time of payment in order to receive a notarized title for the purchased vehicle.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 28 vehicle auctions, selling 2,865 abandoned cars and contributing over $1.9 million to the City’s General Fund.

The current auction will have 98 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

City reps said abandoned vehicles take up valuable curb space needed for traffic circulation and become an eyesore in neighborhoods. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works has towed 8,186 vehicles in 2016.

Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction and view vehicle information by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Impound Lot.

All prospective bidders must register before viewing.
