NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu and city officials broke ground on the new NOPD Second District Police Station, 3401 Broadway St., Wednesday, May 10. This $6.3 million, 17,000 square-foot facility will support hundreds of officers and provide critical support to the Uptown and Carrollton communities.
“Public safety is my number one priority and breaking ground on the new Second District Police Station is another step in continuing on the right track to making New Orleans safe,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “This station will provide our officers with the resources they need and provide better police protection to the residents of the Uptown and Carrollton communities.”
The new facility will replace the current Second District Police Station, 4317 Magazine St. Interior spaces will feature a detective Investigation Unit, a Narcotics Platoon and Task Force Units. In addition, the facility will have a roll call and conference room that the community will be able to use for public meetings. The New Orleans Recreation and Development Commission’s (NORDC) will break ground on the Gert Town Natatorium, adjacent to the new police station, in the coming weeks.
“We are tremendously excited to see work begin on our new headquarters for the 2nd District command," said New Orleans Police Superintendent Chief Michael Harrison. "The new installation is part of our ongoing efforts to revitalize the NOPD’s material resources and invest in creating a 21st century police force ready to serve the people of New Orleans.”
At-Large Councilmember Jason Rogers Williams said, "The new Second District police station is a step forward for not only the officers of the NOPD but the residents they serve as well. The men and women of our police department are committed to their public service and we are proud today to provide the 2nd District with a state of the art facility.”
“I am pleased that the men and women of the Second District are finally going to work in surroundings that reflect this city’s appreciation for their services,” said District A Councilmember Susan Guidry.
“FEMA continues to work with our local and state partners as the City of New Orleans rebuilds," said FEMA Louisiana Recovery Office Executive Director Mike Womack. "This new state of the art facility will allow the city to continue to serve the public and provide critical services needed for residents."
Funding for this project comes from FEMA public assistance funds. It was designed by Concordia Architects and will be constructed by Smith Construction. Construction began in early May and will be completed in Spring 2018.
