What We Do

Christwood offers concierge living to more than 270 residents with resort-style amenities, convenient services, and easy access to healthcare. Innovative in its field, Christwood serves both residents and non-resident seniors through its Community Center, a comprehensive fitness center offering exceptional facilities and programs specifically designed for people aged 55+. The 25,000-square foot Center features a heated indoor pool, full gym, aerobics studio, day spa, indoor pickle ball court, game room, and art studio in addition to the latest in exercise equipment and the Forever Fit Kitchen.

“In furthering Christwood’s mission to help seniors live with independence, we’re offering a new service to the Northshore community,” says Steve. “At Your Service by Christwood is a program that delivers home maintenance and wellness care to non-Christwood residents 55 years of age and older.”

In addition to its expansive Independent Living offerings, Christwood’s Assisted Living is a Level 4 Adult Residential Care provider, a unique designation that provides a licensed nurse on site for 24 hours a day. A Master Plan task force is currently working to develop plans for additional residential offerings along with an outdoor sports complex.

Christwood places an intentional focus on integrational relationships with students at Christ Episcopal School and has worked collaboratively with the school to foster relationships between residents and students.

Who We Are

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Christwood first began as a ministry of Christ Episcopal Church to care for local seniors in all aspects of their lives. Today, it is a comprehensive, not-for-profit Life Plan Community, also known as a continuing care retirement community, that includes 161 independent residences, including 18 stand-alone cottages, and 34 personal care apartments, 30 skilled nursing suites, and 29 memory care suites on a lush 117 acres in Covington.

Executive Officer L. Stephen Holzhalb, III, D. Min, first proposed the idea of Christwood in 1989 when he served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church—in 2004, he returned to Christwood to serve in his present role as Executive Officer with the guidance of a 16-member volunteer Board of Directors.

A New Orleans native, Steve attended The General Theological Seminary in New York and Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. Before coming to Christ Church, Covington, he served as Head Master of Ascension Day School in Lafayette and as a priest in parishes in North Louisiana.

Christwood values its ongoing relationships with numerous Northshore organizations, including The Alzheimer’s Association, St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Foundation, St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce, Northshore Community Foundation, Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West, Southeastern University, LSU School of Social Work and Eat Fit Northshore.
