Catholic Charities To Offer Free Financial Education For St. John Parish Residents

RESERVE, LA – Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans will offer a series of free financial education classes for residents of St. John Parish beginning Thursday, Aug. 24. The program will help St. John residents learn to set financial goals, maximize their income, follow a budget, understand credit reports and scores and prepare for major life events, organizers said.

         Classes will be offered at South Central Louisiana Technical College, 181 Regala Park Rd. in Reserve.

         “In just four lessons, St. John Parish residents can learn the basic skills they need to better manage their financial resources,” said Bambilyn Smith, Catholic Charities Financial Literacy case manager. “By teaching the fundamentals of financial education, we are strengthening families and building a more resilient St. John Parish community.”

         In addition to the classes, Catholic Charities case managers also work with participants to assess their individual needs and develop a plan to help improve their financial stability.

Lesson 1      An Introduction to Financial Empowerment

Thursday, Aug. 24, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Students are introduced to the concept of Financial Empowerment and participate in assessments to support financial education discussions.

Lesson 2      Budgets: The Spending Tracker

Thursday, Sept. 14, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Participants will be introduced to the Cash Flow Budget, learn to track their spending using a Spending Tracker Tool, and determine their needs, wants and obligations to effectively reduce expenses.

 

Lesson 3      Understanding Credit Reports and Scores

Thursday, Oct. 19, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Students will learn about credit scores including how to order, understand and dispute items on credit reports.

 

Lesson 4      Goals and Life Events

Thursday, Nov. 16, 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to set finance-related goals and establish a plan and time frame to attain their goals.

 

         The financial education classes are free to St. John residents with funding from the St. John United Way.
