BP Money To Help Pay Off Fire Trucks In Bayou Cane

BAYOU CANE, LA (AP) — Bayou Cane fire officials say they plan to use the department's share of the oil spill settlement from BP PLC to pay the first installment on their two new fire trucks

The Courier’s Maki Somosot reports that the department is expected to get nearly $192,600 from the $21.5 million settlement. Fire Chief Ken Himel says that will be between $130,000 and $140,000 after legal fees.

He says the department was not expecting the settlement money next year, so had not budgeted for it.

Himel says it will be added to $140,000 the department had allocated to pay the note on the pair of $625,000 trucks, called "quints."

Each can serve as both an engine and a ladder truck, has a built-in foam system, and can be operated by only three firefighters.
