Bollinger's 14th Fast Response Cutter Sent To U.S. Coast Guard

LOCKPORT, LA (AP) — A Lockport-based ship building company announced that its latest vessel has been delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Florida.

The Courier’s Mike Hill reports Bollinger Shipyards delivered the Heriberto Hernandez on Thursday.

The 154-foot patrol craft is its 14th Fast Response Cutter. Bollinger plans to build at least 58 more to replace the fleet that they began constructing over 20 years ago.

The company says the vessel has a flank speed of 28 knots and state-of-the-art command, control, communications and computer technology.

The company says this vessel is named after Coast Guard hero Heriberto Hernandez, a fireman aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Point Cypress who made the ultimate sacrifice while patrolling the Vietnamese coastline.

The Coast Guard is scheduled to commission the vessel in Puerto Rico in October.
