LOCKPORT, LA (AP) — Bollinger Shipyards has won a contract to build 26 more cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard.
CEO Ben Bordelon announced the contract Thursday in a news release.
The company won its first contract to build Sentinel Fast Response Cutters in 2008. The company has delivered 17 cutters so far and with this award, will eventually build 58.
All 58 cutters are expected to cost the federal government nearly $3.8 billion — an average of about $65 million per cutter — according to The Advocate, which cites an April report by the Congressional Research Service.
The cutters measure 154 feet long and can host a crew of 24 for up to five days at sea.
The company says the additional phase means 500 shipyard workers will have more work.
