BATON ROUGE (AP) — State Rep. Patrick Connick says some local industrial facilities are gassing Louisianians.
So the Marrero Republican has backed a bill requiring facilities that break state and federal environmental guidelines to line their fences with air monitors to detect leaked pollutants.
Supporters say they've been seriously sickened by the chemicals released into their communities. The House Natural Resources Committee voted 16-1 Wednesday to advance the measure to the full House for debate.
Connick says he brought his bill because plants won't publicly share their data. He says the bill wouldn't penalize large plants doing their jobs, only "bad actors."
Facility representatives opposing the bill called the measure a "one-size-fits-all approach" that would impose costly, but flawed technology on about 500 facilities around the state.
