Backers For New City Say Enough Signatures Gathered For Vote

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Organizers of a drive to create a new city in East Baton Rouge Parish believe they have collected enough signatures to hold an election to decide the fate of the proposed new city.

The petition organizers to create the city of St. George tell the Advocate’s Rebekah Allen they have gathered enough signatures. Thursday is the last day for them to turn in their signatures to the registrar of voters.

If they are short of the required 17,859 names, the petition will be voided and volunteers will not be able to restart their effort for two years.

Lioney Rainey, a spokesman for organizers, would not say how many signatures the group would turn in Thursday. But he said it would be more than the 2,694 needed to close the gap.
