Archbishop-Emeritus Francis B. Schulte Dies

PHILADELPHIA – Archbishop-emeritus Francis B. Schulte, who served as Archbishop of New Orleans from 1989 until his retirement in 2001, died peacefully last night, Sunday, January 17, 2016, in Philadelphia, according to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

         He was 89.

         The Archdiocese of New Orleans reports Archbishop Schulte was born December 23, 1926, in Philadelphia. He was ordained to the priesthood May 10, 1952, and ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia in 1981. He served as Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, WV, from 1985-1988 before coming to New Orleans.
