NEW ORLEANS – Warren Easton Charter High School has launched its annual Hall of Fame Scholarship campaign for seniors graduating from the oldest public high school in Louisiana. Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock has pledged to match donations raised for the scholarships to be awarded on Friday, May 19.
Each year, notable Easton alumni are inducted into the Hall of Fame based upon contribution to the community, excellence of character, significant professional accomplishments and a demonstrated love for Warren Easton Charter High School. Sandra Bullock was inducted in 2009 as an honorary member.
This year, Gulf Coast Bank and Trust and Zito Companies are serving as presenting sponsors of the Hall of Fame event. As part of the ceremonies, college scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors based on academics, financial need, community service and an interview process. In 2016 $120,000 was awarded to 34 seniors, the largest amount ever awarded.
“If you are ever wondering about how good life is and can be, you can come to Warren Easton," said Bullock. "These kids have been working a couple of jobs, some come from hard places, but every time they walk under that roof, they know they’re cared for. They’re admired for what they can bring to the table.”
Over the years, the Hall Of Fame has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors and presented faculty members with more than $20,000 in teaching excellence awards.
Matching donations may be made online or by mailing a check to the school at Warren Easton Charter Foundation, 3019 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119.
