NEW ORLEANS – Team up with Core Element and presenting sponsor Schlumberger for the 6th Annual Strike for STEM fundraising event Saturday, October 15, 2016, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Rock n’ Bowl, 3016 S. Carrolton Ave. The annual benefit features a night of bowling, food and cocktails, plus dancing with the dynamic Disco Amigos, and New Orleans’ premier party band The Wiseguys.
Individual Strike for STEM tickets are $50 per person in advance ($60 at the door) and include food, drinks and live entertainment. Team sponsorships are also available and include team entry into the Strike for STEM bowling competition.
All proceeds from the night benefit Core Element and support STEM education – science, technology, engineering and math – for teachers and students.
“Core Element brings innovative, hands-on STEM learning to area classrooms by providing training, content, resources and support for science and math teachers,” said Jan Brenan, Executive Director of Core Element. “When teachers enhance their STEM knowledge and have the tools they need to be confident and creative in the classroom, students become actively engaged in the learning process. The result is increased student interest, participation and proficiency in STEM subjects.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Louisiana will have 69,000 STEM-related jobs to fill by 2018. However, currently less than 30 percent of Louisiana’s students graduate with proficiency in math and science topics. In New Orleans, that number drops to less than 20 percent.
Since 2007, Core Element has trained more than 600 teachers and impacted over 62,000 students, reps said.
Strike for STEM sponsors include presenting sponsor Schlumberger and Nick & Amy Altiero, Antares Technology Solutions, API, Boh Bros., First NBC, Laitram LLC, MS Benbow, Carrolton Group, IEEE New Orleans, LLOG, Lockheed Martin, Maria & David Huete, OCSBS, Norma Jean Matei & Family, Southeast Geophysical Society, and Barker Honda.
