NEW ORLEANS – Do you want to receive free trees, and buy fruit trees as great holiday gifts for family and friends? This weekend, you’ll be able to do just that at the Hike for KaTREEna Big TREEsy Giveaway & Holiday Fruit Tree Sale to take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the City of New Orleans Department of Parks & Parkways, 2829 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, behind Dillard University.
Event organizers and sponsors, including the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans and the Apache Corporation, will give away 1,000 free trees plus live Oak trees that were grown from acorns collected from the City Park historic Oaks!
There will also be tree consultation and education opportunities provided by the City of New Orleans Department of Parks & Parkways.
Two free trees will be given to each household represented and additional trees can be purchased for $15. Types available for purchase include Japanese Maple, Red Maple, Crape Myrtle, Pond Cypress, live Oak grown from City Park acorns, Mayhaw, Sweet Bay Magnolia, Southern Magnolia, Little Gem Magnolia, Japanese Magnolia, Nuttall Oak, Pecan, Pine, Fringe, Tulip Poplar, Red Bud, Green Ash and more.
Fundraiser fruit trees from Becnel Farms Louisiana Citrus will be on sale for $30.00 each and include Satsuma, Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Sweet Kumquat, Spanish Olive, Blood Orange, Navel Orange, Celeste Fig and Tangelo.
Hike for KaTREEna is a non-profit organization whose mission is to replant over 100,000 trees lost to Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac. The trees have been provided by a grant from the Apache Corporation.
