NEW ORLEANS – Veteran journalist Monica Pierre earned her third career Emmy at the 47th Annual Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards Gala in December in Hollywood, Fla.
Pierre was honored in the Diversity/Equity/Inclusion Long-Form Content category as co-executive producer of “Battlegrounds: The Lost Community of Fazendeville,” a documentary produced by WLAE-TV.
The hour-long documentary tells the story of Fazendeville, a community in St. Bernard Parish built by the formerly enslaved and located in the middle of the site of the Battle of New Orleans. In the early 1960s, Fazendeville was torn down to expand a national park, forcing out the residents. The documentary follows this story told by the former residents, their descendants, and local historians.
“What an honor to win my third Emmy award for doing such meaningful work,” Pierre said. “This is not just a personal achievement but a testament to the power of storytelling in preserving the rich, yet often untold histories of marginalized communities. Their story should not be forgotten.”
Recently, Pierre was awarded an Alex Trebek Legacy Fellowship and attended the 2023 Media Educators Conference in Los Angeles. At Xavier University of Louisiana, Pierre is assistant professor of practice in the mass communications department, teaching courses in broadcast announcing, podcasting, writing and storytelling.
